Clark Park Farmer's Market in the News [Aug. 4th, 2010|06:10 pm]

"Clark Park serves as a nucleus of University City, a neighborhood in West Philadelphia that encompasses various universities, hospitals, and residential pockets. The area has seen its fair share of challenges and changes in past decades. Once a prosperous street car suburb in the mid 1800s, many communities were ripped apart in the wake of University of Pennsylvania’s expansion in the mid 20th century, and suffered from subsequent crime and disinvestment. Due in no small part to Penn’s more recent commitment to stabilize the community, the area has flourished again, and today it is a place of contrasts. Graceful Victorian homes with flowering front yards merge into blocks of vacant, shuttered homes; the homeless and the Penn professors share a zip code; immigrants and graduate students patronize the same coffee shops."

Clark Park Fundraiser December 6th [Dec. 5th, 2008|10:01 pm]

briansiano
Give a gift of your own to Clark Park -- and have a great time -- at the 'Party to Rebuild the Park' tomorrow, Saturday, Dec 6. This classic West Philly unoccupied-house party will be thrown at 4502 Kingsessing Ave., 4-8 pm. Admission is on a sliding scale, from $10 to $25. Proceeds go to support the rehabbing of the North Park (Park A).

Enjoy local live music, food and beverages. Check out gift items and certificates donated by local artists and merchants. You can also pick up a famous Clark Park t-shirt or other goodie (everybody knows somebody who needs one).

Lots of folks there will have been planting trees in the park all morning, but we promise we'll all try to shower before the party. We hope to see ALL you friends drop by, and we're always grateful for your support.

Rooms to be available in my house [Sep. 18th, 2008|09:40 pm]

briansiano
Okay, during October, I'll have two rooms available in my house for rent. It's a shared house in Wewst Philadelphia/University City, with a shared first floor, laundry, kitchen, living room, etc. Cable TV (living room only), TiVo, and DSL is included in the deal, and utilities are included in the rent. You'd share a bathroom with one other person.

There's a fairly big room on the second floor, and a smaller room on the third floor. I'm asking $550 per month for the third floor room (available end of October), or $650 for the second floor room (available end of September). I'm also looking for a female for the third floor room, as the current housemate up there's a woman, and she'd feel more comfortable sharing the floor with a female.

Location is half a block from the Green Line on Baltimore Ave. Clark Park is a block away, it's real close to the trolley lines.

So, any restrictions? No pets, no smoking. That's basically it.

Clark Park Announcements: Youth Soccer, Farmer's Market and Elections [Sep. 5th, 2008|12:30 pm]

briansiano
Registration for the Fall 2008 Youth Soccer season as just opened. Please browse to our website's Youth Soccer page (http://www.clarkpark.info/YouthSoccer.html) to download the required forms and information. The deadline is September 15th.

Also, due to the expected inclement weather, the Farmer's Market 10th Anniversary Celebration scheduled for September 6th-- tomorrow-- has been postponed to October 4th.

And finally, this October, the Friends of Clark Park will be electing new board members. We want people who love the park, use the park, and can get involved with everything that keeps it such a great place. (And we'll need a new Secretary, too.) If you're interested, visit our table at the Farmer's Market on Saturdays.

Friends of Clark Park News, August 1, 2008 [Jul. 31st, 2008|11:04 pm]

We certainly hope you've managed to get out to the Bowl to see Shakespeare in Clark Park's production of As You Like It, which runs until August 3rd.

And we've been working hard, too. We've finished creating the videos of the July 16th General Membership Meeting, where the Park A Revitzliation Plan was presented to the neighborhood and discussed. We've also incorporated some of the images from the architects' presentation. You can view these videos online by clicking in the windows below.

Part 1: Introduction by Jonathan Snyder; Outline by Matt Grubel; Goals and Constraints by Lisa Haines

Part 2: Paths and the Plaza by Bryan Haines

In this episode of Dialogue for Donors, PhilanthroMedia travels to Philadelphia, PA, where The Food Trust makes great strides to combat urban food deserts by sponsoring local farmers markets.

There's some dandy footage shot at Clark Park, and two of our own-- FoCP President Frank Chance, billed as "market volunteer," and farmer Gina Humphreys-- get some face time.

Clark Park Volunteer Work Day - Nutter inaugurates new basketball court [Jun. 12th, 2008|12:07 am]

briansiano
Park lovers and neighbors, join us for the next Clark Park volunteer day! Saturday, jun 14, in "the park that loves you back", from 9am to 1pm our Morning Work Day will set us to mulching and caring for our newly-planted trees in the Middle Park (B Park). Tools will be provided.

Afterwards, 1-3pm, join us to celebrate our newly-resurfaced basketball court at its public dedication! Mayor Michael Nutter will arrive around 2pm to join a posse of luminaries, including Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, Secretary of DCNR Mike DiBerardinis, Commissioner of Recreation Susan Slawson, representatives from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, University of the Sciences, the Office of Watersheds… along with neighbors and community members.

Katherine Gajewski of the Mayor's Office notes, "The outdoor basketball court is not only a great place to shoot hoops, but it is also managing stormwater at the park. Through a partnership with the Water Dept. Office of Watersheds, a water drainage system was created underneath the new court which collects rainwater from not only the court, but 43rd St. and the adjacent parking lot. What is so special about this demonstration project is that replenishes our groundwater system with clean rainwater, rather than mixing it with pollution in our sewers which then overflows to our rivers.

"The new DCNR grant will support the redesign of Park A, the portion of Clark Park located between Baltimore and Chester Avenues. The proposed plan calls for the creation of a central plaza, consolidation of the pathway system to create more usable green space, the addition of more benches and game tables, additional trees and understory planters and lighting upgrades. Stormwater issues will also be address in the redesign, including improved drainage and catch basins."

Parents, bring your kids. Give them a hand at tree care and then let them shoot a hoop. It'll be fun for all.

June 2008 means Festivals in Clark Park! [Jun. 6th, 2008|10:06 am]

briansiano
June is when Clark Park's summer really begins. Not only does the farmer's Market start running on Thursdays, but we're blessed to have two fantastic music festivals grace our lovely park.

This weekend (June 7) brings us the latest Best Fest, and if you click on the link, you'll get their Myspace page. Performers will include The Extraordinaires, Vice Versa, Kurt Vile, Drums Like Machine Guns, Serpents of Wisdom, Soft People, L'ananas, The Chimeras, and the Beat Jams.

It's also wonderful to see the resurrection of a West Philadelphia tradition; the stunning posters and designs for the Clark Park Music and Arts Festival on June 21st. The new poster's a stunner, and their website's logo (by D.E. Christman?) is just spiffy. They also have a MySpace page that has other information there as well.

Party for the Park, May 8th [May. 6th, 2008|11:37 am]

briansiano
IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO YET -- THIS IS THE EVENT that pays for most of the the lawn care (the seeding, fertilizing and mowing) and most of the trash removal in Clark Park during the peak season (May through October). The City does not pick up this cost! There is no other way, not this year. It's on the community; it's on us to come through.

If you love the park, and you love the wonderful impact it has on our neighborhood, then please support it now. The tickets are $60 for Friends of Clark Park members ($75 for non-members) and can be purchased online at http://www.toursignup.com/clarkpark (and yeah, we take them at the door, too.)

What does your money accomplish? Let's see. Your $75 would defray the cost of caring for a strip of parkland 14 ft. wide x 33 ft. deep. That's about the same size as two rooms of a typical West Philly twin.

The event runs from 5:30pm to 8:00pm this Thursday, May 8th. But if you can't make it, you can still give to this cause -- and enjoy the park another day.

Some people don't have $60 in their budget. They donate smaller amounts, whatever they can afford. Whatever you give, you will be able to look at the park every day, and realize it was worth every penny.
